The Problem

Feeding a Few Snakes Can Really Add Up

If you keep a few snakes, you know the drill. Here's what keepers run into most, and what Mike does about each one.

  • Shipping Costs Pile Up

Shipping frozen food can cost more than the food itself, and some boxes show up thawed after a delay. Because Mike's rats are bred in the Tucson area, there's no shipping and no dry ice to worry about.

  • Local Sellers Go Quiet

A good local breeder is hard to find, and some of them are slow to answer messages. When you text Mike, he replies the same day. If you want the same order again later, ask him about a standing order.

  • Sizes Are Hit and Miss

Ever ordered a size and gotten something way off? Every one of Mike's sizes lists how big it is in grams, so you know what you're getting before you buy.

Questions Keepers Ask

Is live feeding safe for my snake?

Fair worry. A rat that's too big can hurt a snake. That's why each size lists how big it is, so you can match it to yours. Feed with care: pick the right size, stay and watch, and take out any rat your snake doesn't eat. And if your snake takes frozen, that's a fine choice too.

Isn't frozen cheaper?

Sometimes, if you buy a lot at once and have the freezer space. Here's the math at volume: at 50 or more, a Medium rat is $3.05 each, plus Arizona sales tax. No shipping. No dry ice. No freezer to fill.

How often are new batches ready?

It depends on the size, because rats and mice grow at their own pace. You can text Mike to ask what's ready now, or sign up for batch alerts and he'll email you when a new batch is ready.

Are the sizes what you say?

Each size has a gram range listed on this site, so you know how big it is. You can also ask Mike how big the exact ones you're getting are.

Do you sell to pet shops?

Yes. Mike sells to Tucson-area reptile shops, and the For Pet Stores page explains how shop orders work.

Do you sell pets?

No. Mike's rats and mice are sold as feeders, not pets.
